 Starring: Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol,Kulraj Randhawa, Anupam Kher, Nafisa AliDirector: Samir Karnik SantaBanta Rating: ***1/2 In today's times when films like No Problem and Tees Mar Khan proclaim to be synonym for sheer entertainment, Yamla Pagla Deewana gives us hope that no brainers can still be made using some grey cells. Only audience doesn’t need to use them as often and the Deol men make sure they walk happy back home. YPD is the story of a Vancouver-based banker Paramveer (Sunny Deol) who wants to reunite with his long-lost father Dharam (Dharmendra) and his younger brother Gajodhar (Bobby Deol). But there is a slight problem. The father and son are the biggest conmen in Banaras. Still, they willingly accept Paramveer into their fold but only to exploit his muscle power to serve their con games. Meanwhile Gajodhar falls in love with Sahiba (Kulraj Randhawa), a beautiful 'Punjabi mutiyaar'. As their romance reaches its peak, her brothers arrive and forcibly take her away. Paramveer saves the day with a crazy plan to win the girl back for Gajodhar which leads them to the rustic heartlands of Punjab. What follows is a rollercoaster ride showcasing the Great Indian Joint Family, Eccentric Relatives, Marriage Mayhem, and a classic case of Mistaken Identities! The entire film is an ode to the Deol charisma of the yore and manages to recreate it despite a clumsy first-part and a bit slow script by Jasvinder Singh Bath, who gave a bit too much screen time to Bobby's Gajodhar. Director Samir Karnik needed to spruce up the first half though the story redeems itself post-interval when the action shifts from Banaras to Punjab.  As three brawny charmers, Deols cover-up narrative's flip side with their rustic, earthy Punjabi humor and impeccable chemistry. It’s an adorable combination of a gentle hulk, a prankster lover-boy and a seasoned thespian.Despite Sunny and Bobby’s funny antics it is yet garam Dharam’s vintage magic which grabs the most eyeballs. His histrionics are still smooth as an old wine and make the movie a fun watch. Kulraj Randhawa is pleasant. Sucheta Khanna as her Canada-loving cousin is funny. Anupam Kher makes you laugh as usual at times. Mukul Dev gets the best one-liners. Johny Lever is funny in a brief role. Nafisa Ali is graceful as ever and Amit Mistry does well. What YPD really lacks is the crisper writing and the better music though Tinku Jiya the item song is a big hit. All in all, Yamla Pagla Deewana is an age-old lost-and-found tale with which Deol men will finally find that one elusive hit and their box-office charisma which they seemed to have lost over the years. |

 By Subhash K JhaStarring: Raima Sen, Konkona Sen Sharma, Arunodoy Singh, Rajpal Yadav, Shreyas Talpade, Sushant Singh, Shahana Goswami Written & Directed by Vinay Shukla Rating: *** Mirch is meant to be a tikhi spicy delectable account of sex, eroticism, stolen pleasures and furtive philandering during times of day-to-day stress. Instead it turns out to be one of those half-cooked exotic dishes, more tempting for what it promises than actually delivers. Vinay Shukla's last film Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche which came eight years ago is best forgotten. However his film prior to that Godmother stood tall and imposing primarily because of Shabana Azmi's preponderant performance as a politician in rural Gujarat who rips the male bastion apart with her no-nonsense approach to life and politics. Mirch is about the politics of sex. Set in two different time zones, the contemporary and 'period', it takes potshots at the male gaze as it falls on female sexuality. Each of the four stories has a protagonist, played by Raima Sen and Konkona Sen Sharma in two stories each, with a high libido level that they do nothing to hide. In each story the woman is caught red-handed doing 'it' with a lover by her husband. How the sexually-liberated woman in each story wriggles out of the bedroom crisis forms the core comicality in the quartet of stories. The four stories, apparently derived from the ancient Panchtantra tales and their designedly delicious denouement are neither convincing, nor funny enough to be outrageously fable-like. The stories just about manage to bring a smile on our faces.  Not that Shukla can be faulted for his intelligent and astute handling of such an audacious idea. The quality of 'horniness' specially in a woman makes for very unpoetic cinema. Love when linked to lust tends to lose its lyrical lustre.Miraculously the lustre of love within the lust-work is maintained. Shukla shoots his two heroines with a certain sensitivity although there's not much room in the satirical tales of cuckoldry for subtlety he builds room for tender touches and fleeting moments of arresting intimacy. The film's four –nication hovers between 'horny' and unhonee (improbable). Raima Sen's large limpid eyes lend a certain grace even to her over-sexed character in the past and contemporary times. However Konkona Sen-Sharma's performances in her two tales suffer for the lack of inherent grace in the characters. And the actress doesn't seem to be enjoying the process of playing these 'naughty' characters. In her 'period' piece Konkona cajoles her royal husband (Prem Chopra) to climb up a tree to watch her making love with the stud-senapati. How much fun for the actor and how funny for the audience can such a situation be? Go figure. Interestingly Vinay Shukla has cast Arunodoy Singh as the film's resident sex object. The female protagonists in three of the stories are shown lusting after him and hitting the sack with the stud when they think their husbands are not around.  To create a certain distance from the preposterous parodic premises Vinay Shukla creates a film-within-film format whereby a young struggling idealistic filmmaker (Arunodoy Singh, again) and his girlfriend (Shahana Goswami, powerful in a small role) try to convince a wily producer (Sushant Singh) to produce a film which has plenty of sex, eroticism, humour and drama.The stories that the young filmmaker in Mirch tells the cynical producer are the stories that we the audience see the not-so-young filmmaker Vinay Shukla tell with a blend of whittled-down passion and half-formed sensitivity. Some of it though not all, is interesting. As for the theme of creative compromise that triggers off the four-storeyed plot, is Mirch really liberated from those compromises? The question acquires an added meaning when Mahi Gill shows up to perform an item song choreographed by Saroj Khan in the beginning and the end. Really, Choli ke peeche kya hai??? |

 It may be the end of the road for the John Abraham and Bipasha Basu coupleThere's buzz about Bipasha Basu and beau John Abraham's current state of affairs. Though it is not the first time that there is speculation about their relationship hitting a rough patch, what lends credence to the rumours is the fact that the couple has not been spotted together in public for an extremely long time.  Denying reports published by a popular website, claiming that Bollywood actress Neetu Chandra did a Yana Gupta and went commando at an event this week, her publicist Dale Bhagwagar said, “Neetu Chandra is a girl with dignity and there has been no slip like this.”The website had claimed that Neetu replicated Yana Gupta’s panty-less act and said that it seemed to be “intentional and she might have followed it, after seeing what Yana Gupta has achieved doing the same.” But her publicist dismissed the report as a case of misreporting. “Neetu does not need to resort to any such thing for publicity. In fact, she was planning to initiate legal action on the website and was in the process of approaching the National Commission of Women (NCW) in New Delhi, when the site tendered an unconditional apology for the news. So the matter stands closed.” What can we say but… all is well that ends well. |
