Shahrukh Bola Khoobsurat Hai Tu

There are movies, and then there are bad movies. A peculiar shade of bad raises your expectations and by the 10th minute, brings them crashing down. These movies are, for the most part, a good kid gone wrong. They make you frown at the makers motivation for making them. People who pay for them and watch expecting to have a good time are utterly disappointed. It casts a spell of doom that all the 30-40 people walking out of the hall share(because that's usually the maximum number they attract, which includes rich wastrels or couples).

If I sound gloomy, I conveniently blame it on the film. It involves Lali(Preetika Chawla), a flower seller at one of Mumbai's traffic signals, and John(Afzal khan), also a signal vendor. Lali catches SRK's eye at the signal and from the looks of it, also when hes in a great mood. Because he complements on her beauty- which forms the metaphor for a window into Mumbai's dirty underbelly. Lali and John have an unconsummated love story for the most part, along with half a score of inconsequential, slum-dweller characters- including the bhai gangs, a reporter digging out stories, Hindi speaking German, bar girls etc. It meanders from one inexplicable scene to another with just one constant- Lalis love for SRK. The most gripping scene, in fact, comes courtesy DDLJ- when Lali watches it wide-eyed.

Disappointed as I am, I do believe its a potentially good idea wasted. If you still insist on taking something 'relatable' away from the film, let it be the fact that your self-esteem changes when someone you admire genuinely complements you. Your mom, boss, lover, mentor-anyone. Thats what happens to Lali- Shah Rukh ne bola mai khubsurat hooon, aur mai ho gayi.

Yes, potentially beautiful theme wasted. Sad.

But I do however, agree that Preetika Chawla can pass off as cute. I have a feeling we'll see more of her. So wait till then-she might also lose the puppy fat and the South Mumbai accent which doesn't suit her slum dweller role.

Don't watch. Watch another DDLJ rerun maybe. Or get a pup. Anything.
